Tina Hlimi is a PhD candidate in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto. She holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo and transsystemic Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) and Bachelor of Common Law (LLB) degrees from McGill University.
A jurist by training, Tina has over a decade of experience in social justice and human rights law, supporting refugees and marginalized communities. Her professional experience shapes her interdisciplinary research, which bridges environmental justice, human rights, and legal and policy analysis. She has published peer-reviewed articles, and her legal work has contributed to well-cited court decisions. Tina has also been featured in media outlets for her research on the use of AI facial-recognition technologies in refugee protection hearings.
Tina’s doctoral research focuses on reforming Canadian law and policy to recognize and protect climate-displaced individuals, or “climate refugees,” in response to the growing global challenges posed by climate change.
